Biografía
Julie Won Ireland, MD, is a medical geneticist. She was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She returned to Hawaii from the Mayo Clinic in 2005. She is board-certified in medical genetics and is an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine.
Genetics is a very broad, yet specialized field. Some of the medical conditions diagnosed and treated include: hereditary cancer syndromes, hemoglobinopathies, G6PD deficiency, neurofibromatosis, polycystic kidney disease, cardiovascular genetics, thrombophilia, hearing loss and connective tissue disorders. She evaluates patients across the lifespan with medical conditions secondary to hereditary, or genetic, causes. Patients come from all over the state of Hawai‘i.
She welcomes the diagnostic challenges that exist in this rapidly progressing field. Because of the complexity and personal nature of genetic conditions, Dr. Ireland takes extra time to evaluate and explain all aspects of the consultation, genetic testing and recommendations.
If patients understand their own medical condition, they can be more proactive in their care and recognize how genetics impacts the entire family.
In her free time, Dr. Ireland enjoys relaxing with her family and dogs, playing the piano, gardening, scrapbooking and traveling.
